Background of the Study: Online payment systems have become central to the success of e-commerce, enabling seamless transactions between consumers and businesses (Müller et al., 2024). The evolution of payment technologies, including mobile wallets, digital bank transfers, and third-party payment platforms, has significantly transformed the retail experience (Oni & Alabi, 2023). However, consumer trust remains a critical factor in the adoption and use of online payment systems. Security concerns, such as fraud, data breaches, and payment system reliability, often influence consumers' willingness to engage in online transactions (Akpan & Eze, 2023).

In Katsina State, e-commerce is rapidly gaining traction, with more businesses offering online services and products. However, consumer trust in online payment systems is still an emerging concern, especially given the growing prevalence of cybercrime and fraudulent activities in digital spaces. While e-commerce firms have adopted various online payment methods to facilitate transactions, the level of consumer trust in these systems remains uncertain. This study seeks to evaluate how online payment systems influence consumer trust in e-commerce firms in Katsina State, and how this trust affects consumer behavior and business performance.

Statement of the Problem: Despite the increasing adoption of online payment systems by e-commerce firms in Katsina State, concerns regarding security, privacy, and the reliability of these systems persist. Many consumers hesitate to engage in online transactions due to fears of fraud and misuse of personal financial information. This lack of trust undermines the growth potential of e-commerce in the region. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate the factors influencing consumer trust in online payment systems and understand how these systems can be improved to foster greater confidence among users.

Objectives of the Study:

1. To evaluate the impact of online payment systems on consumer trust in e-commerce firms in Katsina State.

2. To assess the role of payment security features in influencing consumer trust and behavior in Katsina State’s e-commerce sector.

3. To identify the challenges e-commerce firms face in gaining consumer trust through online payment systems.

Research Questions:

1. How do online payment systems impact consumer trust in e-commerce firms in Katsina State?

2. What role do payment security features play in influencing consumer trust and behavior in Katsina State’s e-commerce firms?

3. What challenges do e-commerce firms face in gaining consumer trust regarding online payment systems in Katsina State?

Research Hypotheses:

1. Online payment systems significantly impact consumer trust in e-commerce firms in Katsina State.

2. Payment security features have a positive effect on consumer trust and online purchasing behavior in Katsina State’s e-commerce firms.

3. E-commerce firms in Katsina State face significant challenges in gaining consumer trust in online payment systems.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: The study will focus on e-commerce firms in Katsina State and evaluate the influence of online payment systems on consumer trust. Limitations include potential biases in consumer self-reports, variations in payment systems used by different firms, and challenges in obtaining sensitive data regarding payment security.

Definitions of Terms:

• Online Payment Systems: Digital platforms or tools that facilitate electronic transactions for purchasing goods and services over the internet.

• Consumer Trust: The confidence that consumers have in the reliability, security, and fairness of an online payment system.

• E-Commerce Firms: Businesses that conduct transactions for goods and services primarily through online platforms.
